To obtain an accurate estimate of the number of loft insulation rolls required, use our loft insulation calculator. You’ll need to measure up the size of your loft space in metres (m) and then select the size of the insulation rolls that you are intending to use. (Keep in mind that insulation product sizes might differ from those used in this calculator.)
For those still using imperial units of measurement: 1 metre = 3.28 ft or 39.37 inches

Once you’ve used our free loft insulation calculator and have a good idea of how many rolls you are going to need, you’ll be able to work out the cost of your loft insulation. Bear in mind that if your loft space is particularly awkward in shape, there may be some wastage involved, meaning you might have to make adjustments to the number of insulation rolls you order.
Loft insulation is one of the most cost-effective ways of insulating your home. A previously uninsulated loft in a detached property that becomes insulated could save a household up to £415 according to the Energy Saving Trust (based on fuel prices as of October 2023).

Insulation is one of the easiest ways to save on your bills. At its most basic, if you have a loft space, you should look to insulate it, or at least upgrade your level of loft insulation to the recommended levels. With an estimated 25% of heat loss in the home thought to be through an uninsulated loft or roof space, the difference can be considerable.
Insulating walls and floors is also important as walls can account for as much as 35% of heat loss and almost 15% can be lost through the floor. Bringing your insulation up to standard results in bill savings, improved comfort, and minimises issues with damp for many years to come. Insulation will improve the Energy Performance Certificate of your home and can even have a positive impact on property prices.
There are a number of routes to securing insulation grants, including via ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS). You could be eligible if you receive one of a number of government benefits and you live in a low energy efficient household (with an Energy Performance Certificate rating of D or below). Alternatively, you could qualify for an insulation grant if you live in a low EPC rated home and your property is in a council tax band A to D (A to E for Scotland and Wales).
For some households, such as where loft insulation is installed, it is possible that the grant will cover the full cost. Loft insulation is usually the less costly option and the most likely to be installed with grant as this ensures that as many households as possible are helped with improving their home energy efficiency.
It is possible that the funding can be used towards other types of insulation such as cavity wall insulation, underfloor insulation, solid wall insulation, room in roof insulation. As these are generally more expensive insulation types, it is likely that your grant will not cover the full cost, so you will be required to make a contribution towards the cost. The actual amount you will have to pay will be outlined from the outset.
Domestic insulation installs are VAT free as part of a government incentive to encourage more households to adopt energy efficiency measures. The 0% VAT applies to a range of energy efficiency measures and is due to run until the end of March 2027 and is applicable in England, Scotland and Wales. Different rates and rules apply in Northern Ireland.
Insulation is highly beneficial to the environment and contributes to a reduction in carbon emissions from UK households. Here’s how many kilograms of CO2 emissions you could save each year (kgCO2/year) based on some of the different types of insulation:
| Insulation type | Detached house | Semi-detached house | Mid-terrace house | Detached Bungalow |
| Loft insulation (up to 270mm) | 1000 | 620 | 560 | 1000 |
| Cavity wall insulation | 1100 | 650 | 385 | 485 |
| Solid wall insulation | 1500 | 880 | 520 | 660 |
| Underfloor insulation | 310 | 190 | 125 | 330 |
