Insulation FAQs

Insulation is one of the easiest ways to save on your bills. At its most basic, if you have a loft space, you should look to insulate it, or at least upgrade your level of loft insulation to the recommended levels. With an estimated 25% of heat loss in the home thought to be through an uninsulated loft or roof space, the difference can be considerable.

Insulating walls and floors is also important as walls can account for as much as 35% of heat loss and almost 15% can be lost through the floor. Bringing your insulation up to standard results in bill savings, improved comfort, and minimises issues with damp for many years to come. Insulation will improve the Energy Performance Certificate of your home and can even have a positive impact on property prices.

There are a number of routes to securing insulation grants, including via ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS).  You could be eligible if you receive one of a number of government benefits and you live in a low energy efficient household (with an Energy Performance Certificate rating of D or below). Alternatively, you could qualify for an insulation grant if you live in a low EPC rated home and your property is in a council tax band A to D (A to E for Scotland and Wales).

For some households, such as where loft insulation is installed, it is possible that the grant will cover the full cost. Loft insulation is usually the less costly option and the most likely to be installed with grant as this ensures that as many households as possible are helped with improving their home energy efficiency.

It is possible that the funding can be used towards other types of insulation such as cavity wall insulation, underfloor insulation, solid wall insulation, room in roof insulation. As these are generally more expensive insulation types, it is likely that your grant will not cover the full cost, so you will be required to make a contribution towards the cost. The actual amount you will have to pay will be outlined from the outset.

Insulation will have an immediate impact on how much you are spending to heat your home and these savings will quickly add up. Opt for loft insulation and the resulting savings could pay back within 1-2 years of your investment. Solid wall insulation is much more expensive and it could take over 10 years before your savings will eventually cover the cost of your insulation. With insulation usually lasting at least 40 years, these savings will continue for many years beyond the initial payback.

Domestic insulation installs are VAT free as part of a government incentive to encourage more households to adopt energy efficiency measures. The 0% VAT applies to a range  of energy efficiency measures and is due to run until the end of March 2027 and is applicable in England, Scotland and Wales. Different rates and rules apply in Northern Ireland.

Insulation is highly beneficial to the environment and contributes to a reduction in carbon emissions from UK households. Here’s how many kilograms of CO2 emissions you could save each year (kgCO2/year) based on some of the different types of insulation:

Professionally installed insulation should last for many years. Loft insulation is expected to last around 40 years, while other types of insulation products can last considerably longer. The performance and longevity of your insulation will be affected by a number of factors including the quality of the installation, issues with leaks or moisture, whether the insulation is compacted by items placed upon it, plus the presence of any pests that could damage the insulation.
